Serengeti Plains
"We walked for miles over burnt out country... Then I saw the green trees of the river, walked two miles more and found myself in paradise." (Stewart Edward White, 1913)
The Serengeti Plains were discovered by Stewart Edward White in 1913. They were named by the Maasai people, meaning ‘endless plains’. These particular plains are located in Africa and are over 30,000km2. It happens to be a tropical grassland, with a dry season and a rainy season and is warm all year round. This is why the grass can grow really high. Some of the grasses in the Serengeti Plains can grow more than 7 foot high........ that’s over two metres!
The Serengeti plains is a well known tourist attraction, with safaris’ all year round. It is also home to many famous animals, including hippo’s, lions and deer. Additionally, the plains are home to many endangered species, including the black rhino, elephant, wild dog and cheetah. The Serengeti Plains is also a UNESCO World heritage site. Over 90,000 tourists visit the park each year.
Grasslands: Grasslands are open and fairly flat and exist on every continent exept Antartica. They are usually found in between rainforests and deserts, because they may not have enough rain to form a rainforest, but too much rain to form a desert. Most grasslands lie in the drier areas of a continent’s interior. There are two different types of grasslands, tropical and temperate. Tropical grassland have two seasons, rainy and dry, and are warm all year round. Temperate grasslands have a warm, hot, cold and freezing season.
Fun Fact! Did you know that one quarter of the Earth’s land is made up of grasslands?
